School/Business Partnerships*
School/business are an important tool for administrators to build extended learning opportunities for students and grow community support for schools. Partners need practical guides for building bridges between schools, businesses, and community. It's about building relationships with stakeholders through partnerships in urban and rural settings.
Technology Standards*
Technology is a vital part of today's learning environments in schools. Based on the past 10 years of helping create Alaska technology standards and writing a national-level book, this course will present concrete strategies for school administrators to integrate technology within all curriculum areas in their school. This course also works on the use of technology by administrators to model effective use, help raise standards of integration, and the use of technology as a management tool by leaders.
Global Project-based Learning*
Diversity in language and culture among students and staff can be either a challenge or opportunity. Global project-based learning is a model for working with diverse students to utilize the differences into distinct learning advantages. Whether the projects include local populations or working to include students from other countries, global project-based learning provides concrete techniques for valuing diversity, integrating technology in project-based learning, and growing community support at schools.
Teaching Powerful Storytelling*
Storytelling is at the heart of good learning and relationships. This course prepares learners to incorporate technology and story telling into academic, professional, community, and staff development activities. Using the process of storyboarding, digital movie creation, web-based streaming of video, and community marketing, educators and administrators can learn to incorporate the power and spectrum of video technology into the education system.
The Art of Digital Presentations
Educators, administrators, and students need the ability to communicate effectively to diverse audiences using technology. Too often the technology becomes the presentation and the speakers voice, message, and ideas are secondary. This course based upon research in literature and experiences teaches the essentials to being effective as a presenter using technology. It includes examinations of the technology, art factors, the audience, and the physical environments of digital presentations. The goal of this course is to empower educators and school leaders to be great models for student presenters and more effective in their work.
Handheld Leader
Is it possible that administrators can be the most informed and connected person in their school or district? The instant access to information through hand held devices gives school leaders "just in time" student data, ability to perform teacher evaluations, and manage time and appointments to name but a few ways to stretch the minutes of their day. The extra time gained can be spent on increasing effectiveness through building relationships. Working with this goal in mind, the Alaska Staff Development Network, Palm Computing, Inc. and the Gates Foundation have teamed up to provide hand held devices to every principal and superintendent in the state of Alaska over the next three years. This session will provide strategies and resources for helping school leaders to stretch minutes and build relationships through handheld technology.
